Green Art Studio Guide: How I Keep My Art Studio Earth-Conscious (And How You Can Too)

As a nature-loving artist, sustainability can't just be a trend for me, it has to stay at the heart of how I create, package, and ship my work. I want my art to reflect my love for the natural world not only in subject, but in practice.

This guide is your behind-the-scenes look at the choices I make to reduce waste, conserve resources, and keep things as earth-friendly as possible. Whether you're another artist, an eco-conscious shopper, or just curious about what goes into a "green" studio, read on. I’ve also included links to the materials I use, so you can skip the research and dive right in!

Sustainable Prints

I use two main paper types for my prints both chosen for their sustainability and high-quality feel.

From Vulcania Graphics and Fine Art, a fantastic print shop right here in downtown York, I use Hahnemühle Bamboo, the world’s first FineArt inkjet paper made from 90% bamboo fibers and 10% cotton. Plus, it’s produced in a way that minimizes environmental impact. Click to learn more about Vulcania

From CatPrint, an eco-conscious online printer, I use their Heavy Cardstock Cotton, a completely tree-free option made from 100% cotton. CatPrint walks the walk when it comes to sustainability: they use 100% biodegradable packing peanuts, recycle all shrink wrap used in production, and offset their carbon footprint through TerraPass and renewable energy credits. When you order a print made with CatPrint, you’re supporting wind energy and waste reduction. Click to learn more about CatPrint

Both papers are archival and delicious to the touch, giving you a print that’s not only beautiful but also responsibly made.

Shipping & Packaging: Compostable and Recyclable

Every order I ship is packed with sustainability in mind. I use:

My goal is to protect your art without adding to the landfill. You can reuse or compost most of the packaging that comes with your order.

Going Plastic Neutral

Plastic sneaks into our lives in so many ways, but I’m committed to keeping my footprint as low as possible. Through CRDC USA, I drop off every scrap of plastic from my business and home so it can be transformed into building materials instead of ending up in landfills or oceans. It makes both my business and home officially plastic neutral!

Studio Fixtures & Furniture

Nearly every piece of furniture in my studio is secondhand or thrifted. It gives my space so much more character and helps me avoid buying new whenever possible. I believe beautiful, functional spaces can be created with pre-loved items.

Studio Lighting

Many of my studio bulbs are still CFLs, which were once the eco-friendly standard for energy efficiency. These days, LEDs are the better choice because they last longer, use less energy, and are mercury-free.

I’m slowly replacing CFLs with LEDs and making sure to dispose of the old bulbs properly at recycling centers, since CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and shouldn’t go in the trash. Bit by bit, I’m brightening my studio the greener way. Click to search CFL disposal locations near you

For My York, PA Neighbors: Local Green Gems

Secondhand Art Supply Swap

Twice a year, I host a Secondhand Art Supply Swap. It’s totally free to attend and a great way to share extra supplies, discover new materials, and keep usable art tools out of the landfill. You don’t have to bring anything to participate, and donations are welcome to help cover event costs. Click to RSVP to the next event

Refillism: The Local Refill Store I Love

One of my favorite shops downtown is Refillism, a cozy refill store where I stock up on all my body care and home cleaning essentials. They offer refillable shampoo, conditioner, soaps, and eco-friendly cleaning solutions, all without the wasteful packaging. If you’re in York, this is a great way to reduce plastic waste from everyday products. Click to learn more
